A LEADER ON VETERANS ISSUES
Caring for our Service Men & Women
As a member of the Assembly's Committee on Veterans' Affairs and the Veterans Health Alliance of Long Island, Michelle has helped enact several
important bills that provide school tuition aid to veterans, real property tax exemptions for Cold War and disabled veterans and legislation that
establishes a mentoring program for veteran-owned businesses that contract with state agencies.
Educating Veterans about their Benefits
In addition to sponsoring a Veterans Benefit Fair, Michelle recently partnered with the New York State Division of Veterans' Affairs in hosting a
conference and roundtable discussion for Long Island's college/university presidents and administrators on how to create more veteran-friendly
campuses. In her district, she helps educate veterans, as well as local stakeholders, about the various government benefits and services available
to them and their families.
Honoring our Veterans
Michelle has secured funding for the Nassau County Chapter 82 of Vietnam Veterans of America to visit the wounded service men and women at
Walter Reed Army Medical Center. She also provided funding to revitalize Albertson Memorial Park, including the World War II veteran's monument.
Each year, Michelle brings together students, residents and local businesses to collect handmade valentines, personal care products, clothing and
electronics as part of her Valentines for Vets Program. Michelle and her staff personally deliver truckloads of donated merchandise to the veterans
at Northport VA Hospital and the State Veterans Home at Stony Brook.
