PROTECTING OUR ENVIRONMENT

Protecting our Drinking Water

Michelle co-sponsored a new law that protects our drinking water from harmful contaminants by requiring the proper disposal of pharmaceuticals.

Promoting Electronic Waste Recycling

During her tenure as Town Clerk, Michelle spearheaded the electronic waste recycling program for the Town of North Hempstead, which has reduced some of the most environmentally hazardous forms of toxic waste. Now as an Assemblywoman and a member of the Assembly's Environmental Conservation Committee, Michelle has worked tirelessly to implement a statewide electronic waste program. As a result of her efforts, an electronic waste recycling bill was recently passed by both houses of the State Legislature and signed into law by the Governor.

Advocating for Clean & Renewable Energies

Michelle Schimel at Recycling Plant

A hybrid car owner and a member of the Assembly's Energy Committee, Michelle has advocated for legislation that encourages the use of clean and renewable energy. Realizing the burden that rising energy costs places on residents and businesses, Michelle co-sponsored the state's new net-metering law. This policy expands net-metering to allow all utility customers to receive credits for energy they produce through solar, wind and farm technologies.

Guilt-Free Green

Two years ago, Michelle launched her Guilt-Free Green Program to help educate residents and local businesses about healthy green lifestyle choices. This joint collaboration is headed by Assemblywoman Schimel, Frank Morris of the Sierra Club Long Island, Fran Reid of the Town of North Hempstead, Patty Katz of Reach Out America and Laura Weinberg of the Great Neck Breast Cancer Coalition.
